Page County Public Schools

Mr. Cumbia’s Computer Science class at Page County High School took a field trip to the cell site on campus last week. This year the cell site has been fully upgraded to support 5G from the 3 major carriers: T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T. Students learned how to identify all of the parts of the site including microwave transmitters, radio transmitters, fiber-optic cables, mast, and equipment shelter. They discussed the cost of accidentally damaging a fiber-optic cable when digging; watch out for the orange markers along roadways and always call to get cables marked before you dig! They also learned how the cell sites in Page County are line-of-sight microwave linked, which is common in rural settings where fiber-optic infrastructure is limited.
