Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates all Americans who have ancestry in countries that speak the Spanish language. It was started in 1968 by President Lyndon B. Johnson as a weeklong celebration and it was expanded to a month in 1988 by President Reagan.
Hispanic Heritage Month starts September 15 and continues until October 15.
The 2023 Hispanic Heritage Month theme is Latinos: Driving Prosperity, Power, and Progress in America.
Starting on Monday September 18th, Spanish classes at Page County High School, organized by the language chair and Spanish teacher Mr. Flatley, have put together a series of events to take place during the month. Dr. Cencich is also a part of coordinating the events.
Some of the topics are:
· Hispanic Culture Trivia competition for the Entire Student Body.
· Spanish Dialects Around the World: How Spanish Varies from Country to Country
· Exploring Mexico and Spain with National Geographic
· Take a Virtual Tour of the -Smithsonian -National Museum of America Latino-Smithsonian
· Virtually Tour Ancient Ruins
· Taste Hispanic treats/Hispanic Cuisine
· Cultural Art Activities, such as making paper bag luminaries, making your own Guatemalan worry dolls, making Mexican paper flowers, and more…
