Nurse Aide Program at PCTC Focuses on Building Communications Skills
This week Mrs. Leake's Nurse Aide class is learning about proper communication techniques, as well as possible communication barriers. The students were asked to explain to their partners how to assemble a Lego structure with only verbal communication. They could not show each other what they were trying to relay, nor could they look at their partner's display to see if they were explaining it correctly. Once the students thought they had the structure correct, they would ask Mrs. Leake to check their work. Classmates quickly discovered that they rely heavily on their sense of sight to adequately communicate. Students also learned that residents may have visual impairments and need to use their other senses in order to communicate effectively.
