The Nurse Aide students in Mrs. Leake's class are learning about how aging affects the body. They wore geriatric simulator suits to mimic extra weight, sensory issues, arthritis, vision impairments, and many other ailments. The students were asked to do everyday tasks such as: signing their names, tying their shoes, buttoning a shirt, and walking around the room with a walker. After this activity, the students realized that the body changes drastically as we age, and that we take for granted things that we are able to do every day. Residents may struggle greatly with some of these simple tasks. Therefore, we must remember to be empathetic, caring, and patient with our residents when completing Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).
