Mr. Comer’s RTI at Page County Middle School participated in a mock civil trial last week. Students took the roles of judge, lawyers, plaintiff, defendant, court officers and jurors. The case of Young v. Gardner dealt with cell phone use while driving, which resulted in an accident and major injuries to the plaintiff (Young). Students researched various legal terms and learned of the difference between a civil case (and viewed an episode of Judge Judy) and a criminal case (and viewed an episode of “Law and Order”). Students acted out the roles and the jurors came to a decision based on the facts presented in the case. (In this case, the defendant was found liable for injuries suffered by the plaintiff as a result of the accident)!
This activity is a sample of the different types of engaging activities that are taking place through out our division to help students gain a deeper understanding of material presented in class.
