Based on a writing activity, students at Page County Middle School were encouraged to learn to write more descriptively. Students were asked by their teacher to teach her how to paint. The teacher was blindfolded, and one at a time students described the process of painting. They guided their teacher from grabbing a brush, to placing the paint on the palette. The biggest challenge was mixing colors, since the teacher could not see. The students were trusted to guide her to the correct colors and how to place the paint without making a mess. Students became aware of the importance of detail in instructions when they would tell the teacher to grab the paint, but not specifying the "paint bottle," and she would instead stick her hand in the paint. Learning to write descriptively and specifically is an important part of the writing process.
